The first thing any couple new to a country needs is a friendly guide – how do you do this?, where do you go to buy that? Peter’s own experience in relocating helps make the transition smooth. Denis and Janette are a young couple from Germany who came to Peter to talk insurance.
When the conversation turned to Janette’s idea to start a dog grooming business, Peter saw a chance to help. Even though she had a good grounding in a vet’s practice in Germany, Janette had plenty of questions about starting from scratch here. Sabine Tetzlaff, whose background is in running a successful podiatry business, stepped in to help advise. The business has been a huge success, and Janette is now looking at purchasing a commercial building as well.
Peter knows from his own early days in New Zealand exactly how he can best help new immigrants. For this young couple, as with most others, the best place to add value is getting insurances sorted out, opening bank accounts and transferring currency, introducing a suitable accountant or lawyer, finding a place to live and settling down to a new job or business venture. While Peter’s main skills are in investment, and many of his clients have large portfolios, Peter finds it is best to put these decisions to one side until the newly-made Kiwis have found their feet.
Settling into a new country takes time, and grooming clients for a successful new life is something Peter and Sabine do well. Peter fondly remembers the many people who helped him and Sabine when they first arrived, and likes to return the favour by doing the same for others.
